Methuen Ratifies Landmark GIC Health Insurance Deal for City Workers and Retirees

Mayor D.J. Beauregard and the Methuen Public Employee Committee announced Thursday the ratification of a comprehensive health insurance agreement that will move city employees, retirees, and their families into the state's Group Insurance Commission — a shift city officials are calling a landmark in labor-management cooperation.

TOWN HALL

The agreement, jointly announced by Mayor Beauregard and PEC President Kara Blatt, represents a significant restructuring of how the city covers health insurance for its workforce. Transitioning to the GIC, the state's pooled insurance program, typically allows municipalities to realize substantial savings while maintaining strong coverage options for employees and retirees. The fact that both the administration and the employee committee are announcing the deal together signals the ratification was reached cooperatively rather than through arbitration.

Also noted on the city's homepage Thursday: the Historic District Commission meeting scheduled for today has been relocated to 90 Hampshire St. Residents planning to attend should note the change of venue.

The city's Election Department is also actively recruiting poll workers for the September 1 and November 3, 2026 elections. Interested residents can call 978-983-8515 to apply.
