Peabody Bans All Outdoor Water Use as Drought Reaches Critical Level

DATELINE — PEABODY

Peabody enters the weekend under a full outdoor water ban as a "critical" drought tightens its grip on the region, while the school district wraps its 2025-2026 year with a message of pride to families and the library prepares branch-hours changes heading into July.

TOWN HALL

The drought situation remains the most pressing municipal story. Peabody has prohibited all non-essential outdoor water use, a step that affects sprinkler systems, lawn watering, and car washing across the city, according to recent coverage from Peabody Patch (see ELSEWHERE IN THE NEWS). Residents should plan accordingly as summer heat builds.

SCHOOLS

Superintendent-level leadership sent families a formal end-of-year message this week, calling the 2025-2026 school year "both productive and rewarding on so many levels" and congratulating students on a successful finish. The next major school-calendar milestone on record is a Building and Grounds Subcommittee meeting on June 30, followed by a School Committee retreat set for August 13 and a regular School Committee meeting August 25. Kindergarten registration for 2026-2027 remains open for families who have not yet enrolled.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Peabody Institute Library is giving patrons a heads-up about a branch-hours adjustment taking effect July 6. Starting that date, both the South Branch (78 Lynn Street) and the West Branch (603 Lowell Street) will move to the same schedule: Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday 1 to 9 p.m., Friday closed, and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Main Library at 82 Main Street is not affected. Patrons planning weekend visits should note the branches are closed Sundays through the summer.
