Methuen Issues Juneteenth Holiday Alert, Trash Pickup Pushed to Friday
Residents should plan around a disrupted trash and recycling schedule this week as the city observes the Juneteenth federal holiday on Thursday, June 19, and the Election Department quietly launched a search for poll workers to staff two fall votes.
TOWN HALL
The city has posted a Juneteenth holiday-schedule alert on its homepage, warning that trash and recycling collection will run on a delayed schedule on June 19. Residents whose pickup day falls on Thursday should check the city's website or their hauler for adjusted timing.
Separately, the Election Department is recruiting poll workers for the September 1 primary and the November 3 general election. The city is asking anyone interested in helping run a smooth, fair voting process to call 978-983-8515.
SCHOOLS
All Methuen Public Schools buildings will be closed Thursday in observance of Juneteenth. The Methuen High School JROTC unit is the exception — the cadets travel to Devens, Mass., that day for their Junior Cadet Leadership Challenge.
With the holiday break falling mid-week, the academic calendar shows the finish line approaching: June 22 is an early-release day marking the 180th instructional day, and June 23 brings another early release on the 185th instructional day. The School Committee holds its Workshop and End-of-Year meeting the evening of June 22.
